After 2 days of searching the internet and trying about 100 different suggested fixes for this problem I decided to wipe the whole drive and do a clean install again, now I think it's unwise to assume that the problem can be entirely avoided by self-limiting how the computer is used. There are too many five star reviews on Newegg for that.
I tried to temporarily fix the issue by setting the computer to not sleep at all.
