Even the folks that built AVG don't use their own program I found out. At least I was able to get to my desktop and settings functions. Well, truth be told, Microsoft's antivirus is a bit behind the others when it comes to comparative antivirus software tests. However, it's by far the least intrusive, considering most other antivirus programs come bundled with crapware, install problematic browser extensions, and contain occasional popup ads. Layered security as a concept is flawed.
If you think your computer is safe WITHOUT comprehensive, real-time antivirus, YOU'RE part of the problem - your PC is likely to be infected by spambots, rootkits, or trojans, even though Ultimately you want your Anti-Malware products to do their job first, but then operate efficiently and stay out of your face unless necessary. I keep being told that Windows Defender is just as good as any other security software. I run it, but not the extras.

A good antivirus doesn't just protect you from "surfing unsafe sites," it also protects you from outsiders trying to get in through security holes in Windows that aren't patched yet, and If you're following common sense and other good security practices, Windows Defender may be fine, depending on your risk tolerance. The money saving wasn't as important as eliminating the renewal hassle.
